4 Portable, Braces-Friendly Snacks

Whether you’re prepping snacks as an adult with braces or you're doing so for a child with braces, knowing delicious, healthy and braces-friendly snacks is a must. Our orthodontist in Gainesville, FL, Dr. Mullally, is here to share four snacks that you can take on the go that are safe for anyone wearing braces.

1. Soft Fruit

Fruits are typically a safe choice as long as you reach for soft fruits. Certain fruits like bananas and grapes are portable in their natural element, making them easy to toss into a bag or lunchbox, while others may require some prep time. Chop up your favorite soft fruits, place in a portable container and enjoy a traveling fruit salad. Or grab your favorite yogurt and make a parfait — but layer the granola beneath the fruit and yogurt to soften it up! Look for produce that is in season to save money at the grocery store or farmers' market.

The following soft fruits are easy on brackets and wires:

  • Bananas
  • Watermelon
  • Berries
  • Grapes
  • Citrus

2. Soft Vegetables

Perfect for a day at work, school or an outing, cucumber slices, roasted veggies or an avocado make a great snack. As with the fruit, depending on the vegetable you choose it may need to be prepared. An avocado can easily be packed as-is but you’ll need to roast your sweet potato before eating. These vegetables are great and safe options for orthodontics:

  • Avocado
  • Roasted or steamed veggies
  • Green, leafy vegetables
  • Cucumber
  • Peas
  • Squash
  • Mushrooms
  • Tomatoes

At first glance, you may think most of these vegetables aren't able to be enjoyed on-the-go. However, that's not true! All you need to do is set aside some time to prepare the vegetables; chop, cook and portion your produce of choice into a container. There are a lot of recipes that your stomach and braces will thank you for. Consider making a veggie bowl, roasted kabobs or a scrumptious greek salad with tomatoes, avocado slices, and cucumber!

3. Proteins

If you're looking for a fulfilling snack, reach for a protein-packed food. Try sliced ham or turkey from the grocery store deli, boiled eggs or tuna fish. Eat these snacks as-is or use them to make a sandwich. Additionally, don't forget to make use of your leftovers — last night's casserole, chili or pasta dish makes the perfect snack when placed in a portable container.

4. Pre-Packaged Snacks

While fresh snacks are great, sometimes you just don't have the time or opportunity to enjoy them. Don't despair — there are ready-made snacks that are easy on braces! Cottage cheese, Jell-O, applesauce, yogurt, pudding, soft cookies, and soft crackers are all pre-packaged for easy traveling.

Children, teens or adults with braces all need a quick, convenient snack now and again. If you reach for sugary snacks, be sure to thoroughly clean your braces afterward and rinse with mouthwash.

Don't let your orthodontics prevent you from snacking! There are many braces-friendly recipes and snacks to make for yourself, a child or a loved one. To learn more about braces in Gainesville, FL, schedule an appointment with Studio32 Orthodontics!
